🇬🇧 Strike notice by LFI Duras staff:
UPMD parents’ representatives concerned on the continuity of the teaching service
The UPMD parents’ representatives have been informed by the school that a strike notice has been given for 17 January, leading to the suspension of classes.
The reason for the strike is legitimate: following difficulties in obtaining long-term residence permits and while waiting for the situation to be resolved by the diplomatic authorities, the staff concerned are asking that the school be authorised to cover the costs they have incurred for travel and short-term stays in countries bordering Vietnam, in order to obtain an extension of their visas, which to date has not been the case.
In fact, the current situation obliges these staff to pay for the right to work, which is not acceptable.
UPMD had already raised the issue of this payment at the School Council meeting in September.
The AEFE and the diplomatic post had been informed of the situation for some time. The problem is therefore not new.
To date, some twenty teachers and staff at LFI Duras are in a precarious situation, which in the short term could result in class closures.
UPMD fears that if the situation of these staff members with regard to residence permits does not improve quickly, the school may see some of its staff leave Vietnam permanently and in the short term face increased recruitment difficulties.
This could have serious consequences for the education of our children.
UPMD supports the staff concerned and asks that the costs they have incurred to obtain a residence permit to work be covered.
UPMD has written to the Director of the AEFE to express the legitimate concerns of the families it represents and has asked him to provide a satisfactory response in terms of support for staff in difficulty.
UPMD remains mobilised in the interest of the families and will inform you of the follow-up that will be given and possibly ask for your support for other possible actions.
